Peter Selwyn returns to The Maltings and Berwick Festival Opera, following the success of his Wagner programmes in 2014 and 2015 with an afternoon of glorious romantic music, much of it by Wagner once again but this time on a wonderfully intimate scale for piano and female soloist.
Peter Selwyn is an internationally acclaimed conductor who has worked extensively with some of the world’s great opera companies. Closer to home, he’s worked with ENO, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, Scottish Opera, Glyndebourne and the Royal Opera, at the Aldeburgh Festival and on opera projects with the BBCSO at the Proms and with the CBSO. Peter studied piano as a postgraduate at the Royal College of Music, before going on to study conducting with David Parry.
He conducted our acclaimed production of Die Walküre last September in Berwick and Perth, as part of Berwick Festival Opera’ long term goal of completing The Ring Saga - Jonathan Dove's innovative reduction of the Ring Cycle. Peter returns to Berwick this summer (after working with Opera North on Der Rosenkavalier) to continue our Wagnerian journey with a choice selection of songs including Wagner’sWesendonck Lieder.
This set of five songs for female singer and piano was originally titled Fünf Gedichte für eine Frauenstimme(five songs for female voice). The songs are settings of poems by Mathilde Wesendonck, the wife of one of Wagner's Swiss patrons. Composed while he was working on his opera Tristan und Isolde in the late 1850s, Wagner himself called two of the songs "studies" for Tristan und Isolde, exploring new musical ideas that are later developed to their full romantic intensity in the finished opera.
